Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Automotive Brake Systems 101 Learning The Basics

By Eric Driver

Your car’s braking system is arguably one of the most important assemblies of your vehicle. Not only is it in constant use, but a failure of any type can place your life – and the lives of your passengers – at risk. Despite this, most drivers rely on their brakes every day without understanding how they work.

Even though automotive braking systems have evolved over the last several decades, the current design is surprisingly simple. This article will explain how they work and describe some of the problems that can occur.

How Your Car’s Braking System Works

When you want to stop your car, you press the brake pedal with your foot. However, the force with which you press down on your pedal is insufficient on its own to bring your vehicle to a stop. In fact, you would be unable to stop your car on your own even if you used as much force as you were able to muster. To solve this problem, a system must be put in place to amplify the force of your foot. This is the job of your master cylinder.

The brake pedal is attached to a plunger within the master cylinder. The master cylinder is connected to the calipers at each wheel through a network of hoses. This network is filled with hydraulic brake fluid. When you press the pedal with your foot, the plunger is pushed forward. This, in turn, pushes the hydraulic fluid forward, amplifying and transferring your foot’s force through the hoses to the calipers.

Each caliper sits atop a disc rotor, surrounding the top portion of the rotor. When the hydraulic fluid reaches the caliper, it pushes a caliper piston against the side of the disc. Because the piston and disc are both made of metal, their rubbing against each other would cause each of them to wear the other down. It would also produce a jarring grinding noise. Thus, a buffer is needed: brake pads.

The pads are designed with wearable material, and are mounted on the inside portion of the caliper. When fluid reaches the piston and pushes it toward the disc, the disc is squeezed between the pads. This causes friction and generates energy. This energy is responsible for helping stop your car.

What Happens When Air Gets Into The System?

The hydraulic fluid in the hoses is not compressible. When you press the brake pedal, there is no room for “give” in the network of hoses leading to your car’s wheels. As a result, the pedal will feel firm.

As the pads wear, however, the caliper piston is forced to move further out to apply pressure against the rotor. This means more fluid is allowed between the caliper and the piston. When this happens, the master cylinder may introduce air into the lines. Unlike hydraulic fluid, air is compressible. If it is introduced into the system, the pedal will feel spongy when you press it.

What Is That Squealing Noise?

As mentioned earlier, the brake pads are designed with wearable material. Over thousands of miles of rubbing against each of the rotors, they will slowly wear down. Most pads have metal markers in them that become exposed once 75 percent of the wearable material has worn away. When these markers rub against the rotor, they produce a squealing sound. This is an indication it may be time to replace the pads.

What Is That Grinding Noise?

Suppose you refuse the replace the pads after they have worn to the point of squealing. Eventually, the metal will begin to scar the rotor, causing a grinding sound. If you have the problem addressed quickly, your mechanic may be able to simply resurface the rotor and replace the pads. If, however, you wait too long to have the issue addressed, the rotors may need to be replaced. This can be expensive.

It is important that you maintain the health of your car’s brakes to ensure your driving safety. When you notice problems, regardless of their size, have them resolved as quickly as possible.

Loss of integrity in underground city tunnel causes evacuation of Downtown Montreal

A one-inch settlement of the roof of The Bay tunnel to the Montreal Metro caused authorities to evacuate 12 blocks of the Montreal downtown core.

Several people noticed water infiltration in the tunnel over the last few days. On Friday, August 24, at 1 p.m., while investigating another water infiltration incident, The Bay employees noticed that the ceiling of the tunnel portion of The Bay’s basement sales area had descended one inch over a 7 meter length. They subsequently called police. The police and firefighters evacuated the basement of the downtown Bay store. The police closed de Maisonneuve Boulevard from Aylmer Street to Union Street, over the area of the crack.

At 4 p.m., firefighters evacuated the Parkade Montreal Building and The Bay Department Store after finding pieces of concrete falling from the Parkade Montreal structure, a multi-story carpark with five levels of offices on top. They also evacuated the downtown portion of the Line 1 / Green Line of the Montreal Metro subway, from Lionel-Groulx to Berri-UQAM stations, and evacuated the McGill metro station, which is situated below The Bay tunnel. After consulting with city engineers, Centre 2001, the loading dock of the Bay and its Hertz car rental agency, Les Promenades Cathedrale underground shopping centre and office tower, and a neighbouring office tower to the Parkade were also evacuated. Police cordoned off an area from Bleury Street in the east to University Street in the west, and from Ste-Catherine Street in the south to President Kennedy Street to the north.

The closure of the Metro caused havoc to the Friday afternoon rush hour, as over 40,000 people regularly use the Green Line (Line 1) every day. Montreal Transit Corporation workers issued directions during the day, though some may not have been informed of a provisionary bus service to replace the lost subway service. Loudspeakers announced that commuters should use the unaffected Orange Line (Line 2), which has lines between 5 and 10 blocks south of Line 1 (Green Line), and also connects to Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM stations.

The downtown area is intended to remain closed for at least the weekend, along with portions of the underground city, or RESO. The tunnel was built in 1966. For the last few days, city work crews have been working above the slab in question, digging a one meter trench to install a median and segregate a new bike path on de Maisonneuve Boulevard. The tunnel roof lies five meters below street level.

Residents of Montreal are frustrated with the crumbling infrastructure in and around the city, including the collapse of the de la Concorde Boulevard overpass over Autoroute 19 expressway last year, the shattering of a column holding up the Autoroute 720 Ville Marie elevated expressway last month, and other incidents.

How To Rent A Dumpster

Click Here To Know More About:

byAlma Abell

During a major cleanup or house renovation project it is often a good idea to consider dumpster rentals in Portland OR as there will invariably be a lot of waste accumulation. Of course you can drag it all into the backyard and hope it disappears all by itself but, alas, it won’t. You can consider loading it in the trunk of your car and making multiple trips to the dump, damaging your car in the process or you can rent a dumpster.

There is little doubt that renting a dumpster is by far the best solution, but how do you go about renting one?

Although it cubic yard container then call it a “ten yarder.”

If you plan on dropping the container on the street or anywhere other than your property check with the local authorities before you arrange rental. In some areas a permit is needed to drop the container on public property; if you live in a gated community you can bet that there are provisions in the association contract that will deny you the right to bring a dumpster into the village.

Once you have a clear idea of where the container will be dropped, clear a space for the delivery truck bearing in mind that these are quite substantial vehicles and they need plenty of space to maneuver. If the container is going to be dropped on the street it is a good idea to place a few traffic cones in the area to keep the space free from parked vehicles. If the driver finds that he simply cannot drop off or pick up the container, it won’t happen. You may have to wait several days until a container becomes available and you may get charged for the drive-by.

When you think you have a good idea on big a container you need, go up one in size. In most cases the amount of trash will exceed what you think it will be. Drywall, old carpets, wood and the likes take up a lot of space and if you’re getting rid of weighty material such as concrete the company that provides dumpster rentals in Portland OR will only allow the container to be partially filled otherwise it will be overweight.

If you are about to embark on a project where you know substantial waste will be generated then you will need to contact companies that provide dumpster rentals in Portland OR. Contact Portland Disposal & Recycling, Inc, serving the community for over 60 years. Click here to know more.

Rhode Island will receive US$90 million in funding from the United States federal government to support unemployment benefits in the state.

Rhode Island’s Department of Labor and Training stated on Wednesday that it requested the line of credit because the account utilized to provide funding to unemployed individuals in the state had decreased to only $2 million; enough to last only a few days.

Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.

In a statement released by the Department, the agency said: “Unemployment insurance customers will not experience any delays in receiving their weekly payments.”

Unemployment in Rhode Island was 12.8 percent in August 2009 – the third-highest rate in the United States. During the first eight months of 2009, Rhode Island’s state unemployment insurance trust fund has provided over $300 million in unemployment benefit funding.

In addition to Rhode Island, 20 other states have outstanding balances on money they borrowed from the Federal Unemployment Account of the United States Department of Labor. Rhode Island has an outstanding balance of approximately $90.68 million due to the account. The loans are interest-free until December 2010.

Ten puppies with bags of liquid heroin surgically implanted into their bellies were having seizures in a drug bust in Medellin, Colombia, said authorities.

“They utilized a wide range of smuggling, the most repulsive of which was the use of puppies,” said John P. Gilbride, head of the DEA’s New York office.

“There have been cases of animal cruelty that have led to the discovery of drug labs, but not to the extent of an animal being used to carry drugs, especially a puppy,” said ASPCA spokeswoman Jo Sullivan.

Investigators believe that the dogs were used to smuggle heroin into New York on commercial flights. The drugs were then to be distributed and sold along the East Coast.

“Ten puppies, including Labrador retrievers, were rescued during a 2005 raid on a farm in Colombia,” said the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Wednesday. The Agency also announced that they had made more than 30 arrests.

Authorities believe that a veterinarian, Andres Lopez Elorez (who is also believed to be a fugitive in Spain), opened the bellies of at least six of the ten puppies, inserted 500 mL bags of liquid heroin, and then stitched them back up. Three puppies had died due to infections after the drugs were removed. A total of 3 kg of heroin were recovered from six puppies. The bags were found using ultrasound.

“The surviving dogs are still alive and well, we’re told,” said Gilbride. “I think it’s outrageous and heinous that they’d use small, innocent puppies in this way. This investigation identified the individuals who were responsible for overseeing and smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin from Colombia to the East Coast.”

The investigation revealed that the smugglers, whose ring was based in Medellin, not only used people and puppies to conceal their drugs, but also body creams, aerosol cans, and the linings of purses and luggage.

A tipster is said to have led authorities to the puppies.

It is not known how many puppies were actually used in the smuggling operation.

Three dogs were adopted by Colombian police. At least one of those puppies will be trained to sniff for drugs.

About 24 kilograms of heroin was seized in recent raids in Colombia which have resulted in more than 20 arrests and another ten in custody in New York. A total of at least 24 kilograms have been seized in these raids.
