EU deems UK privacy laws inadequate, takes legal action

Sunday, November 1, 2009

The European Union has warned the UK government that it does not do enough to protect its citizens’ online privacy and personal data. Now the EU has moved to the next stage of legal action, which could see Britain taken to court.

The warning follows complaints over the Phorm company’s targeted advertising system. The controversial technology is designed to track the activities of internet users, and was tested on some BT customers without their consent. Campaigners complained to various bodies including the UK’s data protection agency, and the communications regulator Ofcom. No action was taken. The City of London police began an investigation, but this was soon dropped.

People’s privacy and the integrity of their personal data in the digital world is not only an important matter: it is a fundamental right

The EU Commission formally warned Britain that it was not meeting EU rules in April. Other countries that have been warned include Germany, Poland and Romania. However, last week the Commission moved onto the second stage of the infringement procedure against the UK, with a letter to the government.

The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) has been particularly criticised by the Commission for its weak definition of “consent” and its limited sanctions. The Commission also found that there was no independent body to oversee and hear complaints about communications interception. Overall, the letter says that the UK fails to comply with the EU’s Data Protection Directive and e-Privacy Directive.

“People’s privacy and the integrity of their personal data in the digital world is not only an important matter: it is a fundamental right, protected by European law,” the EU’s Information Commissioner Viviane Reding said in a statement on Thursday. “I therefore call on the UK authorities to change their national laws to ensure that British citizens fully benefit from the safeguards set out in EU law concerning confidentiality of electronic communications.”

The Home Office confirmed that it had received the letter, but has so far not responded. Ministers said that they would reply to the letter after they have taken some time to consider it. The Home Office has two months to reply, and if the Commission is not satisfied with the response, then Britain could face charges in the European Court of Justice.

UK public sector workers strike over pension rights

Wednesday, March 29, 2006Local Government workers in the UK withdrew their labour yesterday as part of a dispute over pension entitlements. The members of 11 different trades unions were involved in the 24hr strike. As the day began they declared that support for the strike was solid. Although the strikers work for local councils, their pay and conditions are agreed nationally. The Local Government Association which represents the local councils in England and Wales declared predictions that 1.5 million people would stay away from work as “wildly optimistic”.

The Unions’ complaint is that local government workers are being treated unfavourably compared to other public sector employees. They say that agreements on pensions that have been reached with civil servants, teachers and health workers will allow those staff to continue to retire at 60 while local government staff will be forced to work until they are 65. Civil servants work for national government, teachers work for local councils but have their own pension arrangements and most health workers are employed by the state-controlled National Health Service.

The Local Government Association claims that if council workers continue to be able to retire at 60, it will increase the levels of Council Tax (a tax on people living in properties which funds a proportion of local government expenditure) by 2%.

The striking workers provide a wide range of services from assisting teachers in the class room, through inspecting kitchens for hygiene to provising care to the vulnerable in society. In some places council workers collect tolls for road tunnels or manage ferries. Mainstream media have reported on the strike all day with heavy coverage of disruption to commuters where transport has been affected. The unions have emphasised the large number of their members who are women working in low paid jobs.

The Government which regulates the scheme claimed that the early retirement provisions (called the rule of 85) were age-discriminatory and had to be removed.

The strike ended at midnight. The Unions have not declared any further strike days.

The Unions involved were AEP, AMICUS, CYWU, GMB, NAPO, NIPSA, NUJ, NUT, TGWU, UCATT and UNISON.

Leaked cables cause Australian concern

Friday, December 10, 2010

Leaked diplomatic cables between Australia and the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have raised controversy in the Australian community. The documents were released by the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks. The cables between the then prime minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, and the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, revealed that China may need to be forced to integrate into the international community. The secret documents also contained information of a conversation between Clinton and Rudd in Washington. In the interview, Rudd stated that China was “paranoid” about Taiwan and Tibet.

The sensitive documents may place a strain on diplomatic relations between Australia and China. Despite this, Kevin Rudd reassured the public that the “robust” relationship between Australia and China wouldn’t sustain any substantial damage to the relations between the two countries. At this stage, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has provided no further comment on the matter, other than to ensure that the relationship between China and Australia would allow opinions to be expressed without any threat to either side.

At the heart of the leaks is Australian founder, Julian Assange. Wikileaks have now released 821 of their promised 251,287 US diplomatic cables. The cables are being released on a stage-by-stage basis. Earlier this week, Assange was arrested on suspicion of rape in London under a Swedish arrest warrant placed on him from a court in Stockholm on November 18.

Submitted by: Tamir Paz

What are your options when lose a tooth? There are over ten thousands dentists just in the city of Los Angeles. How do I choose the right one? The decision can be pretty overwhelming for someone who isnt sure where to start. Thats why weve done written this simple guide to help you make the right decision.

Today, we want to talk to you about affordable dental implants and how they can help you if you are missing a tooth, or are using other solutions such as dentures and bridges. Dental implants are widely regarded by dentists as the #1 solution for replacing missing teeth, as they give you back that smile you want, they give you back that confidence, and you can once again enjoy the awesome life experiences a city like Los Angeles has to offer.

You may be wondering, why should you get dental implants? There are other solutions right?

Of course, dentures is one of them. Dentures have been around for over 500 years, with its modernization starting in 16th century Japan. However, we have reasons for not getting dentures. Here are just a few of them

Presumably, dentures are associated with older people. Thats not a good omen, you dont want missing teeth to signal your mid-life crisis.

Dentures are hard to maintain. You got to take them out everyday, put on this adhesive that doesnt really do its job, and are a pain to wash and rinse.

You will fall victim to eating and speech impairment. Dentures arent built like your teeth, theyre basically a rubber or plastic block laying on top of your gums. Think about chewing a big piece of gum that takes up your entire mouth, thats what a denture feels like.

They often fall out! Yeah, its a nightmare if youre out at a luncheon and youre dentures decide enough is enough and fall out onto your plate. How embarrassing!

As dentists, we have looked at all the research and the medical advancement of the last 50 years, and can firmly say that dental implants are the best solution for one or multiple missing teeth. There are a lot of advantages for getting a dental implant, in comparison to dentures. So what are dental implants? Why are they better?

First, theyll bring back your confidence. Having a full set of awesome, healthy teeth will bring back a smile to your face, and youll have fun and enjoy your time at events like Coachella.

They look natural! Yes, dental implants are an artificial solution for missing teeth, but good ones look exactly like natural teeth on the outer-face. Think of dental implants as your third set of teeth. Dental implants look and feel natural, so much in fact that youll forget which ones are dental implants when youre looking in the mirror.

Unlike dentures, they wont slip out. Whatever bad, embarrassing signals that went through your body when reading about them slipping out wont happen with dental implants. With regular dental care, you have little reason to worry about your dental implants ever falling out.

Dont dental implants sound awesome? Dental implants can get you out your house and have you feeling awesome again. No more missing teeth, no more stares, no more sad feelings!

Getting a Great Deal on Affordable Dental Implants

Its obvious to you that were telling you if you have missing teeth, the #1 solution for you is to get dental implants. Were not the only ones! Since theyre so great, many dentists in Los Angeles have learned to place dental implants!

One good thing about Los Angeles, is that there are over 2000 dental practices open everyday. Thats close to 1900 people per every dentist. It sure seems profitable to be a dentist! Since there are so many dentist, and even more people in Los Angeles, low cost dental implants are easy to come across here than any other place in the United States.

However, finding for yourself the best dental implant practice can be hard, with so many places to choose from. It can be rather bothersome to go to a dentists website and find out you have to go to their office just to see how much theyre charging for a dental implant procedure. You shouldnt have to spend hours and hours in the waiting room, writing down a price comparison of implant prices for all the dentist in Los Angeles. Thats why we did that for you! Yes, we took the time out of our days to compile a spreadsheet of quite a few dentist in Los Angeles, and what their prices are for dental implants.

Heres a quick breakdown of the price of dental implants in Los Angeles. Getting a dental implant in this city is readily affordable, with the average price for a dental implant being $2250. In comparison, the average cost for a dental implant in California is $3246 and over $4000 across the United States. For something thats presumably expensive, you can get a dental implant for as low as $1200! Thats awesome! A price like this is one almost everyone can work into their budgets. With such affordable dental implants, you can put those savings towards a shopping spree in Downtown LA, a weekend trip to Catalina Island, or perhaps for the exceptional, put it towards retirement.

Make Sure Youre Getting a Complete Dental Implant

If you arent satisfied with our price list, and want to work for those dental implant prices, we have some tips for you!

The prices we have given to you are from dental implant practices that offer a complete dental implant for an awesome low cost price. These are places you can get high quality dental implants without sacrificing money to get them. However, there are other dentists out there that seem to be way cheaper, but you should be very wary of them.

Have you ever been stuck in traffic on the freeway, and got so bored not being on your phone that you took a look at those bright LED billboards? You may then have seen some advertisements for $399 implants. That sounds like a steal! However, these flashy ads are too bright to show the tiny print at the bottom, stating that the price was only for the implant post. Yes, dental implants are not one piece, but three.

Heres what a complete dental implant consists of

Implant A small screw-like post that is carefully drilled into your jawbone and acts as the implants roots.

Abutment A small connector piece that acts as a bridge through the gumline to secure the crown of the implant to the post.

Crown The outmost post of a dental implant. The crown is the only visible part of the entire dental implant, and is what you would call your new tooth. A high quality crown will match the color, shade, and durability of your natural teeth.

Advertisements like the $399 billboards above only give you a price for the implant post. However, they arent telling you that the abutment and the crown, which are equally just as important for a dental implant to be complete, add around $2000 to the pricetag. Thats a total ripoff! If you decide to search for a dental implant specialist yourself, make sure that theyre price includes all 3 parts for a dental implant.

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

Thai police officers are being punished by being forced to wear large, bright pink Hello Kitty armbands.

The armband, which features Hello Kitty sitting on top of two hearts, will be worn by police officers who commit minor offences. These include littering, lateness and parking in a prohibited area. The officers will also be forced to stay with the deputy chief all day in division office and will be forbidden to disclose their offences. However, police officers caught breaking the law will still be subject to the same penalties and fines as ordinary members of the public.

Police Colonel Pongpat Chayapan said, “Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor. (Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It’s not something macho police officers want covering their biceps. This is to help build discipline. We should not let small offences go unnoticed.”

Hello Kitty was created by the Japanese Sanrio Company in 1974. The character has been admired by both children and adults. It features on stationery, T-shirts, lunch boxes, Fender guitars and jewelry. Famous people known to have been spotted with Hello Kitty products include Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey.

Interesting Ideas About Waterproofing A Concrete Basement In Newton, Ma

byAlma Abell

One of the most versatile areas of a home is the basement. The basement is a part of the house that is often converted ito some other use. One of these uses might be as a recreation room. Another use might be a workshop. Some even turn the basement into a spare room. Whatever the use is for, it certainly would not help if the basement started leaking or having moisture problems. There is a restoration service that is used for Waterproofing a Concrete Basement in Newton MA. These are some interesting ideas customers may want to know about the service.

It is best if a homeowner can be proactive and have the basement waterproofed before there are issues. However, that isn’t always the case. One of the reasons for getting waterproofing is to get rid of any moisture that may be found in the basement. Such moisture can lead to mold and mildew, which are detrimental to the health of those exposed. Issues that might be caused by the mold include, but are not limited to, respiratory issues, skin irritations, and neurological problems.

Another obvious reason for ensuring that the basement is waterproofed is to prevent damage to furniture, tools and other items of value that may be in the basement. It would be very costly, as well as time-consuming, to have everything destroyed in the basement. Also, a basement that has leaking water issues or moisture problems may lead to foundation issues, as well. There may also be problems with the presence of insects that are drawn to water and moisture, such as water bugs.

Fitzgerald Restoration Inc has been providing restoration solutions for customers in the Newton, Massachusetts area for more than 22 years. The contractor offers general construction, such as remodeling and renovation. Other services offered are building restoration, masonry work, and waterproofing. For waterproofing services, customers have the options of caulking and sealants, clear water repellents, painting and coating, expansion joints, waterproof coating, power washing, and below grade waterproofing. Cassini spacecraft collects sample from geyser on Saturn’s moon Enceladus

Space probe Cassini performed a close flyby of Saturn‘s icy moon Enceladus on Wednesday. The fate of the $3.5 billion mission was in the balance as the bus-sized spacecraft swooped to just 50 km (30 mi) above the surface of Enceladus to sample the frozen spray issuing from geysers on the moon’s surface. The “water” spraying from these geysers is in the form of dust-sized, frozen water particles, which are ejected into space by gaseous water vapors that build up pressure deep within icy fissures on Enceladus.

Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer was unavailable due to a glitch in the updated software that was supposed to provide an increased hit count of the geyser dust particles. However, dust samples were collected before and after the closest approach and the mass spectrometer functioned throughout the flyby, providing useful data which is now being analyzed.

Mission controllers will have a chance to capture more geyser dust on October 9, 2008 when they may choose to steer Cassini even closer to the surface of Enceladus.

Tidal flexing of this moon due to the gravitational proximity of its host planet, Saturn, continually heaves and cracks the icy surface. This suggests that Enceladus may have a squishy, liquid-water ocean beneath an icy crust. Deep, parallel fissures in the ice crust, dubbed the “Tiger Stripes”, measure warmer than uncracked, stationary surfaces nearby. Friction of these massive, moving plates of ice is thought to provide the heat responsible for the pressurized geysers of sublimated water and ice dust. The presence of these geysers amounts to more empirical evidence of a large, liquid water ocean below the surface of Enceladus.

The Cassini-Huygens space probe is an international mission involving the cooperative efforts of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. Launched in 1997, Cassini has orbited Saturn since 2004 but has never before flown so close to a moon. On 14 January 2005, the Huygens lander successfully explored the atmosphere and surface conditions of Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan.
