Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Schools in Session: Boning Up on Marketing Techniques

by

Susan Payton

Is it safe to assume that your marketing strategy sucks, since youre reading this article? You have one advantage over the competition: youre reading this article. As a business owner, I know its hard to stay on top of so many things, but dont let your marketing homework slip by. It might be a bigger mistake than crimping your hair or tight rolling your jeans was in high school!

There is so much information available today. Too much, in fact. How can you weed through the plethora of websites to find what is relevant to your business without wasting all of your time? Here are 5 tips to get you the Clifs Notes on marketing quickly.

1. Get Help. If you have an assistant or a staff member who can keep on top of marketing trends, consider yourself lucky. Because your time is valuable (you probably have a pricetag in mind for what an hour of your time is worth), its always better to offload the work to someone whose pricetag is cheaper. An assistant may spend 5 hours gathering information, which might cost, say, $50, whereas it might have taken you longer and cost more.

2. Find What Works and Stick With it. Dont waste time flitting from one resource to another. If you find a few magazines, websites, books or newsletters that provide the content you need, use them. Bookmark them and refer to them often.

3. Take Advantage of RSS. I was slow to adapt to RSS, but since I have started using it, I have saved so much time. If you find a blog (ahem, this one, for example) that consistently provides useful content, subscribe to it via RSS. What this means is that every time a new entry is posted, you get an email or RSS notification. I hardly even visit my favorite blog sites anymore, because I can read the posts in my Inbox. No more checking the site every other day for new content!

4. Subscribe to Newsletters. The same as RSS, newsletters offer an effortless way to get news you can use. Some come once a day, others once a week, or like my companys newsletter, once a month. You can always unsubscribe if your Inbox fills up with unwanted emails.

5. Learn to Love eBooks. Again, I had trouble adapting to ebooks. I love physical books, and found it hard to shift my reading to onscreen. But there are so many ebooks that provide useful knowledge on virtually any topic, its hard to deny their value. Because theres no lag time for printing, you can get ebooks on the latest in marketing as its happening. Most are free, but occasionally youll find some worth paying for.

Marketing is a changing climate. What has been relevant in the past wont be relevant tomorrow, so never stop learning. Think of it this way: youre getting the equivalent (if not more) of a degree in marketing without the hefty college pricetag!

Large hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold found in Staffordshire, England

A large hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold has been found in a field in Staffordshire, England.

The hoard, which was found in a private field over the course of five days in July 2009, is in fact the most Anglo-Saxon gold that has ever been unearthed at one site in the United Kingdom. Roughly 1,500 gold and silver pieces were found and the hoard contains roughly 5kgs of gold and 2.5kgs of silver — far more than the previous record of 2.5kgs of gold which was found at Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge.

The big haul in Staffordshire was found by 55-year-old Terry Herbert, while he was using a metal-detector. He had asked a local farmer’s permission to search the land beforehand. Terry is unemployed, and has been in the hobby of metal-detecting for the last 18 years. He said: “People laugh at metal detectorists.

“I’ve had people go past and go ‘beep beep, he’s after pennies’. Well no, we are out there to find this kind of stuff and it is out there.”

It is estimated to take over twelve months before the value of the hoard can be valued specifically. South Staffordshire Coroner Andrew Haigh declared it “treasure“. That means that it belongs to the Crown. Archaeology experts have predicted that it could be worth “a seven-figure sum” and that the treasure may date back to the 7th century. The exact location where the hoard was found is currently being kept secret.

Dos and Donts of Wearing Turquoise Statement Necklaces

by

Nick P.

Turquoise statement necklaces, if worn right, can take an outfit to a whole other level. But most women would instead settle for a safe pearl necklace, because they are afraid of looking like a chandelier. The following tips will help you pull off turquoise statement necklaces without going overboard.

One is company, two is a crowd

You dont want to wear several statement necklaces at once. The plus side of wearing turquoise statement necklaces is that they are the centerpiece of your outfit and just one is all you need to grab eyeballs. In fact, they do not go with any kind of neck accessory-scarves or bow ties. Over accessorizing will take away from the flair of turquoise statement necklaces and make you look like a flaunt-it-all.

Plain Jane to Chic

You can safely pair turquoise statement necklaces with plain patterns for a soft, elegant effect. Alternatively, to add some element, you can complement these necklaces with bold prints-stripes, floral, geometric and even animal prints. Make sure you keep the rest of your ensemble understated, i.e. if you dont want to look tacky.

Come out of the Covers

Come winter and most women keep away their jewelry as who wears a necklace over a turtleneck?!

Instead of hiding under layers of baggy clothing, try to picture yourself in a plain white top, peach cardigan, a turquoise statement necklace, leggings, boots and a dash of red lipstick. Now calculate the money you were going to throw into a fancy evening dress and spend some of it on tasty holiday treats for your loved ones!

Something borrowed, something turquoise

You may have noticed the trend of wearing boyfriends (or husbands) clothes. It has not gone yet. But the risk of looking like a sloppy sloth might be holding you back. The trick is to pair baggy jeans (or shirts) with tank tops (or shorts), and emphasize the chic factor by throwing on one of the turquoise statement necklaces. You will look every inch the style queen without trying too hard.

Know your Color

Most women, to be on the safe side, wear turquoise statement necklaces only with whites. What they dont know is that a turquoise necklace goes with many other colors which normally look like a complete mismatch.

You can wear it with a red top and make an outgoing, confident statement. If you are wearing pink, then instead of pairing it with the conventional white/black jewelry, you can go for a turquoise necklace, which will render your outfit a soothing and welcoming vibe. To add flamboyance to a depressing fall evening, you can pair statement necklaces with sunny yellow dresses (and a genuine smile!)

Conclusion

What makes turquoise statement necklaces so cool is that they are both cheerful and ornate at the same time. They can easily infuse a laid-back I-am-not-that-into-appearances look with a charismatic lure.

24-year-old Aman Kassaye, of no fixed abode, is to face a charge of attempted murder for his alleged role in an armed robbery that netted £40 million ($65 million) worth of jewelry from a London store.

Kassaye is the seventh man to be charged, and is also facing prosecution for conspiracy to rob the Graff store in New Bond Street, false imprisonment, and using a handgun to resist arrest. He will appear at Wimbledon magistrates court on Monday.

The other six men have already been remanded in custody until October 23, when they will appear at Kingston Crown Court. All are facing charges of conspiracy to rob, and two of them are also charged with a firearms offense.

43 diamond rings, watches, and bracelets were taken from the store. The theft occurred when two armed and suited men walked in and took an employee hostage. It has been reported they used prosthetic masks made from liquid latex but police have not confirmed this. Amateur footage also shows a shot was fired. No-one was injured.

The robbery is one of the biggest the United Kingdom has seen. After the crime a string of getaway vehicles was used, with police believing several more offenders assisted with this stage of the plan. Although The Telegraph claims no stolen property has yet been recovered, this is also unconfirmed by police.
