In the present time due to the advancement in medical treatment, quality of health care has greatly improved, but it has also resulted in increase in the cost of medical care. Like other things the rate of insurance policies are also increased.Group health insurance combines pool of people who are healthy and adds few who require costly medical aid. Thus pool of large number accounts for balancing the expenditure of few people, who really need them. This fact makes group insurance viable and beneficial for both employees and employers. Health insurance through employer also provides large tax benefits to both employer and employees. The type of health insurance plan that you choose depends on your age and the time period for which plan to take the policy. There are two types of health insurance; managed health care insurance and reimbursement or indemnity health insurance. Managed health insurance plan means full or complete health insurance. In this type of plan all types of diseases are covered the treatment cost irrespective of the doctor or hospital treating for your problem. The money involved in the treatment is deducted on the health policy. Reimbursement or indemnity health insurance policy allows you to select doctors and hospitals as per your wish and after that pays for your expenses completely too some extent or up to a specific total per day for a specific number of days. No matter what type of health insurance you obtain, you will want to make sure it offers the proper kinds of insurance coverage. An exceptional family health care insurance policy plan contains a lot of coverage. The best possible health policy plan for you and your family is the policy plan that provides you the most flexibility in addition to the most coverage for the least expensive cost.It is very necessary to have a health insurance. It is imperative to save oneself from expensive health treatment; one takes health insurance policy for himself and his family. It is better to take the health insurance policy at a young age. This is because the older you become the health insurance plans become costlier, as health falls with age. The health insurance policy saves you a lot of money.

Hundreds of thousands rally in Australia against IR legislation

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

People rallied in 300 locations across Australia today to protest the Federal Government’s proposed changes to industrial relations laws, WorkChoices. According to police, around 150,000 people congregated in Melbourne, from where speeches were broadcast throughout the country. In Sydney, thirty thousand gathered in Belmore Park and Martin Place to watch the broadcast before marching to Chifley Square.

Sharan Burrow, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), said that under the changes many working conditions would be under threat, including “penalty rates, public holidays, overtime pay, control over rostered hours, shift penalties, even 4 weeks annual leave.” The government has claimed, despite various expert assesment to the contrary, and opposition from major Australian religious and charity organisations and some concern from its own backbench, that the IR changes will improve the economy and ultimately benefit workers, and dismissed the protests as having “little effect”.

Scarring

by

michael russellGetting in to a car accident, having an operation, or just cutting yourself is bad enough, but the scars you end up with can add insult to injury. Scars are nature’s way of healing assaults to the skin, but most of us see them as imperfections. We accept them, but we don’t often like them. Fortunately, if you know how to handle wounds as they heal and care for scars as they mature, you can make the best of a less than perfect situation. First, it helps to understand the nature of a scar. “A scar is just a connection of collagen fibers that the body makes to repair a wound,” says Stephen W Perkins, M.D., a facial plastic surgeon in Indianapolis and a board member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. “The body basically glues the skin back together with a matrix of new collagen fibers.”

Once the injury heals, the scar goes through several different stages. A typical scar usually looks red and irritated for the first few weeks, then it should gradually begin to improve. At the three to six week period, it may actually start appearing more red again, says Perkins. Don’t worry, though it’s just a phase. The scar will “begin to soften and fade and get less red and pink,” says Perkins. “Then, finally, it becomes pale or, hopefully, just blends in to the normal skin color after six months to a year.” Sometimes, it may take a year or two for a scar to develop a finished look. In the meantime, here are some things you can do to give your scar the best chance of blending in.

Decide if You Need to See a Doctor Should You Cut Yourself : Two major signs should send you to a doctor, according to Regan Thomas, M.D., director of the Facial Plastic Surgery Center and assistant clinical professor at Washington University School of Medicine, both in St. Louis. Get medical attention if a cut continues to bleed even after you’ve applied pressure to it to stop the flow. In addition, even if the bleeding has stopped, if the cut is gaping and the edges don’t come together on their own, you’ll probably end up with a better looking scar if you get a doctor’s help.

Carefully Clean The Wound : Once you’ve determined that your cut isn’t serious, you’ll need to cleanse it. It may sting a bit, but it’s worth the effort. “Don’t be afraid to wash with soap and water,” says George Lefkovits, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at New York Medical College in Valhalla. You want to get any dirt and debris out and keep infection-causing bacteria away.

Use an Antibiotic Ointment : Applying a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (sold without a prescription) does two things. It helps counter potential infection, and “the moist barrier allows those cells that are trying to heal across the wound to do so more effectively and more efficiently,” says Thomas. Cuts or scrapes that are kept moist heal faster, about 50 percent faster, says Perkins. For the first week or so, reapply the ointment every day after gently cleaning the wound with a cotton swab or a damp wash cloth. You may want to cover the area with a bandage if it’s under clothing or is liable to get dirty, but this isn’t essential.

Keep New Scars Out of The Sun : Once the injury has healed and a scar has begun to form, you should watch out for the sun’s rays. You could end up with a scar that is darker or doesn’t fade as well if you expose it to the sun. Lefkovits suggests that for the first three to six months, you keep the area covered, use a sunscreen on the scar, or simply keep the area out of the sun.

Try Cosmetic Coverups : After a wound has healed but while the scar is still young, you may want to camouflage the redness, especially if the scar is very visible. Special makeups designed to cover scars can do the trick. “Using these products can help the patient accept their scar while it’s in the process of maturing better,” says Perkins.

Massage Your Scar : Gently massaging a scar after the area is well healed but with in the first six months of the injury can help. “What you do is help to break down the tough collagen fibers that are forming as part of the scar maturation,” says Thomas. “In a practical sense, you’re helping to stretch out and soften the scar.”

Congressional panel concludes Gulf War Syndrome a legitimate condition

A study by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs presented to a Congressional panel on November 17, has confirmed that Gulf War Syndrome is a legitimate illness contracted by soldiers who took pyridostigmine bromide pills in order to counter the effects of nerve gas during the First Gulf War in Iraq. Several other factors likely contributed to Gulf War Syndrome, including excessive exposure to pesticides, mainly Permethrin and DEET, and chemical weapons residue caused by the American demolition of the Iraqi munitions depot in Khamisiyah.

The report estimates that about 1 out of every 4 veterans of the Gulf War are affected by this illness; this could mean anywhere between 175,000 and 210,000 soldiers are affected by the syndrome. The report also concluded that veterans exposed to the toxins spread by the destruction of the munitions depot have died of brain cancer at double the rate of other Gulf War veterans. Other problems associated with the condition are: fatigue, headaches, joint pain, rashes, breathing difficulty, forgetfulness, circulation problems, and cardiac troubles.

Gulf War Syndrome has been the focal point of veterans rights groups since the illness first became noticed in the early 1990s. The United States and British governments claimed that the illness was merely psychological trauma from war misinterpreted as an illness, and veterans could not receive medical coverage for the illness.

“I feel vindicated, but I’m angry. This is so long overdue,” said Denise Nichols, an advocate for veterans’ rights and a nurse who served during Operation Desert Storm. The National Gulf Veterans and Families Association (NGVFA) said that many veterans committed suicide after learning that the government did not recognize their illness as real.

Who To Call For Air Conditioning Installation In Cornelius Nc

byAlma Abell

Have you ever been sitting in your home or office with sweat just pouring off your body because your air conditioning is broken? Hopefully you have a trusted heating and air conditioning company you can call to come right out and repair your equipment. Preferably you can find a family owned business, because they tend to do a good job since their family name is on the line. They also tend to treat their employees like family which keeps them happy. You will probably prefer to have a happy technician to be working on your expensive HVAC system rather than one who is not at all happy with the faceless corporation they work for!

A good HVAC company will provide more than just Air Conditioning Installation in Cornelius NC. They also offer repair services on the air conditioner as well as services on the heating equipment for both residential and commercial units. They also offer emergency services during or after regular business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The company should be able to work on all brands and types of HVAC equipment regardless of the year or model including gas furnaces, air handlers, heat pumps, duct systems, duel fuel systems, and more. Plus you can receive a free estimate for any repairs or new equipment you may need.

You should ask the contractor who does your Air Conditioning Installation in Cornelius NC if he has a maintenance program for keeping your equipment running at optimal efficiency. Without regular maintenance, energy costs can increase up to 20 percent. This yearly maintenance for your AC includes inspecting the cooling coil, adjusting and cleaning the blower components, lubricating all moving parts, and a check of the thermostat. The technician will be able to catch any small problems before they become large problems. Maintenance on your heating unit includes adjustment of gas pressure, cleaning of furnace burners, and adjustment of air flow.

The HVAC company who does all this plus a whole lot more is Air Dynamics MS, LLC in North Carolina. This is a third generation company that has been family owned since 1923. The company is properly licensed and insured to take care of all your heating and air conditioning work.

US clinic plans first face transplant

US clinic plans first face transplant

US doctors are to interview 12 patients with a view to performing the first ever transplant of a human face.

The Cleveland Clinic will choose between seven women and five men to find the person most suited for the experimental procedure, which is a radical and controversial solution to extreme facial scarring or disfigurement.

Having practiced the procedure on bodies donated for medical research, the Cleveland Clinic team believe they have a 50% chance of success. The procedure will not live up to science-fiction predictions and give the recipient the appearance of the donor; the underlying bone structure is the deciding factor in the final appearance. The new face will end up resembling neither the donor nor recipient.

Surgeons in several other countries have announced being ready to perform this procedure in the past. However, the risk and non life-threatening nature of disfigurement have meant that gaining approval for the groundbreaking surgery has been difficult. Like many other transplant operations, the recipient would be required to take drugs to prevent tissue rejection for the remainder of their life. These drugs can have side effects and carry their own risks involving the patient’s immune system.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.
