Interview: Drupal founder Dries Buytaert balances community and company interests

Sunday, February 24, 2008

In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination.

Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments.

Body of James Kim found in U.S. wilderness; wife and children survived

Wednesday, December 6, 2006

CNET reporter James Kim has been found dead in the southwestern Oregon wilderness after getting lost with his family on November 25. Kim, 35, was found at 12:00 noon Wednesday, half a mile away from the Rogue River.

His wife Kati Kim, 30-years-old, and her two young children were found alive on December 4 after they waved an umbrella to a private helicopter. Kati and her two children were airlifted out of the area and transferred by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. Kati suffered frostbite on two toes, but it is expected that she will be in good condition.

The Kim family left San Francisco, California on November 17 on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. After, they planned to go back home to San Francisco but were stranded in a storm that led to their disappearance.

They stayed warm while they were stranded by using the car heater and then burned tires when they ran out of gas. Kim walked into the Oregon mountains Saturday to get help for his wife Kati and his children. Pieces of map and some clothing were found on the mountains Tuesday by rescuers. It is believed that Kim was marking his trail for them. The wet clothing included two gray sweat shirts, a red T-shirt, a sock, and a blue girl’s skirt.

“They were laid out in a well defined area, in a pattern,” Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Patrol said.

Fog caused the police to wait till midday. “This is frustrating. We are so close,” one rescuer said. “There are people pouring their heart and soul into this. We are not going to quit until we find him.”

Kim’s family is not yet available for comment.

Clothes from China piling up on European borders

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Clothes worth millions of euros are being blocked in European warehouses after the European Union imposed quotas on ten types of textiles from China.

The European Commission agreed to the quotas with China in July and many of them, including jumpers (sweaters) and trousers were quickly exceeded.

Retailers across Europe are now claiming they face massive losses. The European consumer’s organisation, BEUC, has said that most of the clothes were ordered before the agreement was made and that their blockage is “ignoring the basic laws of economics”.

A representative warned: “The new quotas will lead to higher prices and less choice for European consumers when they try to buy trousers, pullovers, women’s blouses, brassieres and other textile products in the coming months.”

The Commission is sending a representative to China to try and find a solution to the crisis, but according to the news website Euractive, the quotas are unlikely to be dropped as most EU member countries are in favour of them.

The Finnish communications corporation Nokia announced that its Head will change on September 21. The previous chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to chair in non-executive capacity. The head of Microsoft Business division Stephen Elop will take the position. It is the first time a non-Finn becomes Nokia president and chief executive.

The change follows Nokia’s fall in world markets. It includes a decrease in Nokia’s American market share to less than ten percent after failed negotiations with a number of leading American phone providers. An analyst at a market analyst company Canalys, Pete Cunningham, said, “Despite holding 38 percent market share of the smartphone market, Nokia’s failure to compete with the iPhone and high-tier Android devices, combined with its lack of progress in gaining significant traction in the United States, has led to press and investor dissatisfaction.”

Some commenters suggested that Nokia chose Mr. Elop partly because he is a Canadian, following criticism of American candidates by the Finnish press. However a Nokia spokesman rejected this, saying, “Nationality was not a selection criteria.”

Stephen Elop was president and CEO of the graphics and web-development software house Macromedia prior to its acquisition by Adobe in 2005. He then joined Microsoft as President of Microsoft’s Business Division in January, 2008. Commenting on his new role he said, “Nokia has a unique global position as well as a great brand upon which we can build. The Nokia slogan clearly states our key mission: Connecting People, which will acquire new dimensions as we build our portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

In the announcement the Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors Jorma Ollila stressed an expected shift of focus from hardware to software. “His [Stephen Elop’s] strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company. We believe that Stephen will be able to drive both innovation and efficient execution of the company strategy in order to deliver increased value to our shareholders”.

Nokia stated in an official blog post, “Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business. …Stephen’s background in the software industry is one of his key strengths.”

A dog fell off an Interstate 96 overpass in Livonia, Michigan killing 81 year-old Charles G. Jetchick.

Jetchick and a passenger, who police would not identify, were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital where Jetchick died from his injuries. The passenger suffered only minor injuries.

Police say that the 60 to 70 pound (27-32 kilograms) dog was not thrown off the overpass, but “probably fell by accident while trying to avoid a car,” Sgt. Michael A. Shaw of the Michigan State Police said. “We don’t know and thats why we are looking for witnesses.”

The dog, which fell about 16 feet (5 metres) also died due to its injuries.

Shaw has been with the State Police for 11 years and has never encountered a similar incident. “We’ve had rocks and other stuff like that fall off of overpasses. This would be the first dog we’ve had,” said Shaw.

Australian government provides $15.8 million for North Adelaide Technical College

Australian Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Gary Hardgrave has announced the government will provide AU$15.8 million to establish an Australian Technical College in North Adelaide. The minister said the government was entering into a partnership with the Archdiocese of Adelaide and consortium of industrial and manufacturing companies.

The North Adelaide college will be located in Elizabeth and be operated as an independent non-government school. The college is one of 25 to be established across the country.

Enrolments at the college will begin in 2007 and will offer courses in areas where identified skills shortages exist in the North Adelaide region, specifically – engineering, construction, electronics and cooking.

Mr Hardgrave said that the proposed college had been popular among the North Adelaide business community. “This important initiative has been well received by North Adelaide business and industry, and will help to address skills needs and provide opportunities for those in greatest need, including a lot of Indigenous students in the region,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The fact that this College is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders, means it will be truly industry and community driven,” he said.

Australian Technical Colleges were established to cater for year 11 and 12 students who wish to do an apprenticeship as part of their school education.

The Australian Education Union has expressed a number of concerns about the model put forward by the government. In a report, they claim that trade facilities at TAFE colleges (operated by state governments) will deteriorate as funding is diverted to the ATCs. The union is also concerned that ATCs are supposed to be selective VET schools. According to the union they will have selective entry and preferential funding. It is feared that teachers will be lured away from schools and TAFE colleges to higher paid positions in ATCs.

The Education Union suggested that the government invest in schools that already offer vocational education programs.

Placenta Previa Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Submitted by: Zena M Andrews

Placenta previa is a common disorder in the latter pregnancy phases. It involves painless bleeding. It is an abnormality, which can happen in the placenta near the opening of uterus. Placenta is a disk formed organ and has a diameter of 7 inches. This bleeding occurs when the cervix expands in size and causes disruptions in placenta which contains so much blood. There are various kinds of this ailment which includes complete, partial and marginal. In the former version, the placenta engulfs the cervical opening. But, in the partial version of this ailment, the placenta only covers this opening moderately. In the marginal variant of this disease, the placenta gets near the cervix but does not cover it.

So, pregnant women are the most likely victims of this disease. It can affect every four pregnant women out of 1000 after the 20th week of pregnancy has elapsed. But, Asian women can easily become suffering of this disease as compared to women of other continents. Women who are bearing a male fetus can also get this disease easily whereas its chances are lower among women carrying female.

The probability of this disease is also higher if the woman has conceived at a higher age. If she has given birth to a large number of children, even then she can get this ailment quite quickly. The incidence of this ailment is even more likely if an expecting mother has suffered from it before in an earlier pregnancy.

The doctor can easily diagnose the existence of this ailment through an ultrasound examination. A probe can be inserted in the vagina or placed on the stomach. One of these examination suffices for discovering the placenta but sometimes, both kinds of examinations become quite necessary. As far as the treatment of this ailment is concerned, it depends on how severe is the bleeding and the age of pregnancy. The placement of the placenta also determines the method of treatment. It is better that the women suffering from this disorder deliver their children through a C-section delivery. This kind of a delivery is apt after 36 weeks of pregnancy but sometimes, due to uncontrollable bleeding, such a delivery has to be performed much earlier. A female can also experience stoppage of bleeding but immediate medical care is advocated if it starts again. Females who suffer from this ailment and are in their sixth or later months of pregnancy, should avoid doing cumbersome activities and indulging in sexual intercourse.

In this kind of an ailment, issues occur when the placenta previa should have moved itself away from the uterus as the level pregnancy has increased. However, sometimes, this movement does not happen and the placenta continues to exist near the uterus. Most of the women in their 10-20 weeks gestation term have placenta near uterus but it goes away as the time period elapses. However, the existence of this placenta after 20 weeks indicates an anomaly. Some factors also require females to have a larger placenta size because of its increased functions. For example, the female may reside at greater heights due to which the availability of oxygen for the fetus is low. Therefore, there is an increase in size of placenta.
