Erica Powell, Nkrumah’s private secretary dies

Monday, July 16, 2007

Erica Powell OBE, who was the Private Secretary to Kwame Nkrumah, President of Ghana and later to Siaka Stevens, President of Sierra Leone, died last month at the age of 86. She died at Peterborough on June 5, 2007. She was made an MBE in 1958 and OBE in 1960.

Erica was born on March 15, 1921 at Brighton in Sussex England into a middle class family. She trained as a secretary and then as a teacher. She worked with Barclays Bank during World War II. She was the top candidate in the 1940 London Chamber of Commerce Shorthand and Typewriting exams.

In February 1952, the Crown Agents for the Colonies offered her the position of “Private Secretary (Female)/Gold Coast” which later became the title of her autobiography. She ended up working as the Private Secretary to the Governor of the Gold Coast, Sir Charles Arden-Clarke. While working for the Governor, she became a close friend and confidant of Kwame Nkrumah, then bidding for Ghana’s independence from the United Kingdom. Her closeness to Nkrumah led to her being dismissed in 1954 and being sent back to the UK.

Powell returned in January 1955 to work for Kwame Nkrumah, a position she held till 1965, a year before his overthrow. Her close relationship and loyalty to Nkrumah bred a lot of rumours both in Ghana and the UK. It also brought a lot of resentment from various quarters. She kept in contact with Nkrumah while he was in exile in Guinea until his death in April, 1972.

She later worked for Siaka Stevens as his private secretary from 1970 to 1979. She attended Nkrumah’s funeral in 1972 as part of the official Sierra Leone delegation.

Buffalo, New York warehouse fire injures 12 firefighters

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Buffalo, New York —12 firefighters in Buffalo, New York, United States have been taken to the hospital where they are being treated for smoke and chemical inhalation after a massive fire broke out at a warehouse on Buffalo’s west side, early Monday morning. At least three fire companies started battling the blaze, which engulfed the entire warehouse, sending a plume of smoke into the air which could be seen for several miles, at one point darkening the sky. All 12 firefighters are being treated at Erie County Medical Center, but their conditions are not known. At least 80 firefighters were reported to be on scene along with a total of nine of the 19 fire companies in Buffalo. Firefighters were still on scene as of 9:15 a.m. EDT (UTC-4) today, nearly 24 hours after the fire started.

The fire started at the Leisure Living Pool Supplies warehouse at 1130 Niagara street between West Ferry and Albany streets behind the Rich Products building at around 10:30 a.m. Monday and was not brought under control until 6:30 a.m. today. The warehouse is three floors tall. Firefighters had the fire under control just before 12:00 p.m. Monday, but wind off Lake Erie reignited the fire at around 3:00 p.m. At around 7:00 p.m., most of the blaze was under control, but smoke could still be seen coming from the building. All employees from both Rich’s and the chemical company have been sent home for the day and made it out safely. The building is owned by PoolSupplies.com which is a division of Leisure Living, selling supplies, recreation and chemicals for swimming pools. Leisure Living is a company of Island Pools.

The fire reignited again sometime this afternoon. It appears it reignited due to the earlier collapse of the roof and the winds off the lake.

At 9:00 p.m., firefighters reported that most of the fire was contained under the collapsed portions of the building, but around 10:00 p.m. firefighters reported that more thick black smoke started to rise from the building. Black smoke usually indicates burning, whereas white smoke often indicates water putting out a fire. Firefighters are using a helicopter, courtesy of the Erie County Sheriff’s Department, that is equipped with infrared cameras in order to see the areas of the building which still contain a significant amount of heat or fire.

After having fought the fire for over 24 hours, fire officials stated that the fire was mostly extinguished and ordered fire companies to start shutting down the hoses and pack up their equipment. Just before 1:00 p.m. the fire command post stated that fire investigators were on scene and that “they can call us (firefighters) back if they need anything.”

Officials have urged all residents near the blaze to stay indoors and to shut all windows and doors due to the smoke which has been blowing close to the ground. At least one civilian who was inside a park at the foot of Ferry was also taken to the hospital for smoke and chemical inhalation. Officials were able to evacuate the park and no other injuries were reported. At one point, the sun was blocked by the black smoke rising from the building.

“The fire reignited again sometime this afternoon. It appears it reignited due to the earlier collapse of the roof and the winds off the lake. Right now, one thing fire officials would like to get out and stress is anyone in and around the Niagara and Ferry area, if you could please go indoors, and shut your doors,” stated Michael DeGeorge, a spokesman for the Buffalo Police Department, to reporters. DeGeorge also stated that no residents have been evacuated.

The northbound lane of the I-190 expressway, which lies just to the west of the warehouse, was closed at the Porter Street exit at the Peace Bridge to the exit leading to the 198 expressway for several hours. At 11:15 p.m., firefighters stated they would begin to reopen the lane. Niagara street from Albany to West Ferry reopened to normal traffic in the late morning hours of Tuesday.

Throughout Monday afternoon and early evening, employees of Marco’s Restaurant on Niagara and Albany were providing ice and beverages to firefighters and police officers who were on scene. Temperatures were quite warm, in the upper 70’s (F), with winds gusting to nearly 15-20 MPH, coming out of the southwest. Although the wind assisted in reigniting the fire, it also assisted firefighters by quickly clearing the area of smoke.

The warehouse is a storage and distribution facility for pool chemicals, especially chlorine. Chemical drops could be felt flying through the air, which also had the smell of bleach. According to a source who spoke to Wikinews on condition of anonymity, the warehouse contained over US$8 million in supplies and chemicals.

Earlier tests performed on the air by firefighters and Haz-mat officials had shown that the smoke and fumes rising from the fire are not dangerous or toxic. Further tests were performed, but those results are not yet known and officials don’t believe there was any danger to the air. Officials will testing the water runoff from fire hoses to make sure that it is not contaminated as it is emptying into the Niagara River. The warehouse is located just down stream from a drinking water pumping station with several more scattered along the River from Buffalo to Niagara Falls.

The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation. Last year, on May 14, 2007, at least five buildings that were part of a warehouse complex about 1/3 of a mile from Leisure caught fire, and required nearly 130 firefighters to battle the blaze. Smoke from that fire was seen over 40 miles away.

Poker’s all about luck, says Swiss Supreme Court

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

The Supreme Court in Lausanne, Switzerland has ruled that Texas hold ’em poker is a game of luck, rather than a game of skill. As a result, only casinos can host poker tournaments in Switzerland. Private games with friends, even where money is at stake, are still permitted under the ruling.

Poker tournaments had been growing in popularity in the country, with many events held in hotels and bars. Such venues do not have to pay the 50% tax on profits levied on licensed casinos, nor comply with regulations combating money laundering and gambling addiction. Poker is now categorised alongside roulette and slot machines, which as games of luck can only be played inside casinos. Mathematics, strategy, and bluffing were less important in determining the result than chance, said the judges, overturning a lower court ruling to the opposite effect, and disagreeing with the stance of the country’s Federal Gaming Commission.

Before the ruling, it had been estimated by the Swiss Federation of Casinos that there were about 100 unlicensed poker tournaments every weekend. A Swiss poker website, SwissPokerTour.ch, has described the result as “a black day for all amateur poker players in Switzerland.”

Jeff Stats1. How does class status affect adult learning?2. Rubenson, K. Social class and adult education policy. New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, VOL 106. 3. The main points of the article, including the main conclusions of the article. The article gives a brief overview of the changes that are currently taking place in the society. Those changes are concerned with shifting political platforms on which they are building a new social ideology. This new thinking is based on the massive appeal of the political parties to a different sector in the society. From workers and the disadvantaged politics have moved their attention to the growing middle class as they are acting in terms of capital industrial circumstances. The author of the article argues that global trends have led such notion as governmental responsibility for adult education to a mere disappearance. Nowadays governments are basically leaving the problem of adult education and lifelong learning to individuals and claim that economic movements and free international markets are taking control over such things as education. Basically, the commentary claims that there is no problem of social class being an obstacle to adult education, but there are macro forces influencing it, such as technology changes and economic competition. Therefore one can conclude that people are solely responsible for their own education if they want to stay an active part of the work force, although in reality government has to take care of providing certain programs to those who need them. Evidently this does not happen and those who are dependable on welfare programs, are not getting enough education and training to obtain a job in a well-paid place with opportunity of career growth. On the other hand, workers who are already trained and considered highly skilled are getting more training that is provided by their companies in order to guarantee a decent future performance. The only positive critique in the article was given to the Nordic practices that are employed to help working class obtain training and participate in educational processes. Labor-market policies are the major factors taken into consideration when educational and training programs are drafted in Sweden for instance. The author agrees with such system of taking care of unemployed as it provides for the country more educated labor force that in turn will support economy as a whole.4. What the article meant to you, why it had an impact on you, what insights did you discover? This article in general is a useful piece of information with logical structure and conclusions. It has revealed important findings through works of many researches that state that society nowadays looks different than in the 20th century however the change in social attitudes did not alter trends in adult education for certain classes. This conclusion allowed me to think in a new direction for I realize that lifelong learning has to be approached in a new way in order to be effective. As an adult educator I recognize that motivation is one of the most important factors of successful learning process and knowing what motivates people of different working class/position will lead to more effective results. 5. What you could personally use and specifically apply from the article to help you become a better adult educator? Describe what is relevant to you and how you may practically apply the information. Knowing that people in a modern world are driven by the idea of equality in social classes, and at the same time view education as a measure of status is essential to approaching students in a right way. Personally I will be more confident in a group where initial status of the students does not bear a psychological barrier to obtaining knowledge. As educator I have to pay special attention to the economic tendencies in the country and in the entire world and provide training with the perspective for the future development and growth. Workers who are not highly skilled or unemployed have to be approached with particular attention as they are a big part of the society, successful education of which will affect the entire nation. As Nordic system proves, educators must teach with respect to country’s requirements and also individual needs, as hard as it seems to accomplish such method will yield maximum positive results. Democratization of education has to be a core concept in lifelong learning process allowing students to actively participate and shape their education as they believe it will benefit them. According to Nordic approach, trade unions play an important role in forming workers’ individual and collective identity. As an adult instructor I would appreciate cooperation with trade unions to help workers shape their individual and collective identity that in turn brings up productivity levels and satisfaction. Obviously satisfied individuals are more eagerly learning and working, increasing their educational abilities and economic status. I would have to apply complex educational method based on individual and societal needs of a specific group in order to suit studen

U.S. Housing prices down 9% since February

The median house price in the United States plunged 6.5% in May to $217,000. In February of 2005, the median price of a home was $237,300.

The Economist newspaper said in its June 16th issue; “In other words, it looks like the biggest bubble in history.” by way of reference to what is happening with housing prices in the USA and much of Europe.

Japan provides an example of how a boom can turn to bust. Property prices have dropped for 14 years in a row (40% from their peak in 1991); and yet, the rise in prices in Japan during the decade before 1991 was less than the increase over the past ten years in most of today’s “housing boom” countries.

The total value of residential property rose by more than $30 trillion over the past five years in developed economies, an increase equivalent to 100% of the combined GDPs of those countries. This increase dwarfs all previous house-price booms and is greater than the global stockmarket bubble in the late 1990s. Much of the recent housing activity is being driven by speculative demand. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that 23% of all American houses bought in 2004 were for investment, not for owners to live in. Another 13% were bought as second homes. NAR also found that 42% of all first-time buyers made no down-payment on their home purchase last year.

Many investors are buying solely because they think prices will keep rising, which is a warning sign of a financial bubble. In Miami, Florida, as many as half of the original buyers resell new apartments even before they are built, and properties can change hands two or three times before somebody finally moves in.

Britain’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) reported prices have been falling for ten consecutive months. Forty nine percent of their surveyors reported falling prices in May. This was the weakest report since 1992 during Britain’s previous house-price bust.

Meeting Girl At College Parties

Meeting girl at college parties

by

Tandy Rosalia

For the first few years of college, most social events are held at parties because many of the people attending are under the age of 21. A lot of guys I’ve talked to have asked me “Since I’m not going to bars a lot, how do I meet girls at parties?”

It’s actually freakishly easy, and I can say without a doubt if you fit within social norms (IE have all your limbs attached, not deformed, speak the language at the party) You can easily be meeting countless girls. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that “girls just don’t like me” and “other guys have something I don’t.” This is dead wrong. The key to creating attraction and meeting/hooking up with a girl at a party can come down to three things. 1. Having a flirty vibe 2. Being a source of fun at the party (basically how you interact with everyone) 3. Knowing when to pull the trigger I’m going to break down these more 1. Having a flirty vibe If you simply sit in a corner not having fun then come out of no where and start blatantly hitting on a girl at a party it’s obviously creepy and also very high risk. If the girl rejects your old creeper man approach your going to look stupid. This is what a lot of guys resort to doing however if they really want a girl. It rarely works unless your a celebrity! There’s a much better way of pinging girls for attraction and it will start to work on every girl in the room. What I’m talking about is being a natural flirt…with everyone. This means talking to all the girls in the room, smiling, hugging them, playfully touching them (thumb war, tickling, picking them up and swinging them around). This does not mean blatantly hitting on every girl and being overly sexual Now, I’m not saying go up to one girl and do all of these in this order RIGHT NOW!. Being flirty naturally with all girls will make it more arousing and fun to talk to you. Girls love to flirt, and when your flirting with all the girls at the party you can bet your slippers that the other girls are gonna notice you having fun with other girls besides them. Once your doing this enough, your probably gonna start seeing girls trying to meet YOU instead. 2. Being a source of fun at a party This is probably the most important part. Girls like guys, girls like to flirt, but girls LOVE to have fun. If your not having a great time at a party its going to be really hard to get girls to notice you. When you go to parties you’ll notice a few people that are the life of the party. If they disappeared, people would suddenly notice and miss them. You have to be one of these people, this way girls will welcome the chance to talk to you and mooch off the fun you bring into their lives. If you aren’t a social person your going to have to push yourself to meet everyone at the party and be a social water hose instead of a social sponge. Going crazy at a party, talking loudly, having interesting stories that people want to hear will make you in demand socially. By doing this girls will literally start hovering around you to get in on the fun. An easy way to get in the habit of being this type of person is by meeting everyone in the room, being easily excitable, and amusing yourself instead of looking to others to make your night fun. 3. Knowing when and how to pull the trigger This is where so many guys mess up because they don’t understand how or are afraid to pull the trigger. When your at a party there is a few things that can REALLY help you with girls. If you getting a good vibe from a girl, pay attention for places where you can go talk alone. (patio, empty hallway, bed room or just an area away from the party) Why should you do this? Girls are not going to open up sexually or physically if they are surrounded by 15 of their closest judgmental friends. When you get a chance to hang out as a pair, you will notice the girl can finally relax and be herself with you. At this point you can really start to make a connection and even start hooking up a bit (OH BOY!) Don’t be afraid to get close to a girl you like and DEFINITELY don’t just sit there and chat about the weather. This will get the girl frustrated. If she has wandered off somewhere with you alone, shes there for one thing…YOU! Those are just some quick tips. If you want countless more article on girls in college or learn some of the best ways to be ABSOLUTELY LETHAL with women check out college flirt Check out my latest article on how to text a girl you met the night before. At least one person is seriously wounded and one dead after a 17 year-old male opened fire and shot his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Forsyth, 17, four times outside the Herbert Henry Dow High School located in Midland, Michigan before turning the gun on himself. The shooter was pronounced dead on the scene and according to Midland Police Chief, James St. Louis, the shooter died in the parking lot of the school while the girl is in a local hospital. She is said to be in stable but serious condition at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.

Chief St. Louis says that the boy pulled out a gun and began to shoot the girl after the two had a conversation. He then shot himself. St. Louis also said that the mother of the girl, who had dropped her daughter off at school for the day, tried to stop the incident from happening by driving her car in between the girl and boy, but was not successful. The boy, whose name is not known, apparently had stored the gun inside his backpack.

According to Midland Deputy Chief, Bob Lane, the boy was not a student at the school and was not granted access into the school. Lane also stated that the boy then placed a phone call to Forsyth telling her to meet him outside the school just before 11:00 a.m. [EST].

The school hosts nearly 1,500 students. The school was in lockdown, but according to a statement on the school’s website, the lockdown was cancelled.

“This morning a shooting incident took place at Dow High outside the building near the cafeteria. A Code Red lock-down was issued, but has been lifted,” said the statement.

Sam Simon died, at the age of 59, on Sunday of colon cancer, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2012. One of the co-creators of the television series The Simpsons, Simon helped create the hugely successful series in 1989 alongside Matt Groening and James L. Brooks. He left the show in 1993 after roles as writer and character developer among others.

Before The Simpsons Simon had worked on several shows in various positions. During the 1980s he worked on shows such as Taxi, Cheers, and The Tracy Ullman Show. In 1989 he helped create The Simpsons with Brooks and Groening, and was responsible for hiring the show’s first writing team. Despite leaving the show in 1993 he kept the title of executive producer, and continued to receive tens of millions of dollars every season in royalties.

After his diagnosis he began to donate his fortune to charity, estimated at around US$100 million . He donated to and was an active voice for charities focusing on animal rights including PETA. The Sam Simon Foundation, an organization he founded in 2002, released a statement to TMZ after his death: “For those of us who knew him, his voice will forever echo in our minds; his sense of humor will continue to make us laugh; and his compassion and generosity will continue to impact our lives[…] Sam, you will be missed by many, but there is a particular sadness among our clinic staff. We have been together for so long, and your absence will forever leave a void in our lives.”

Speaking to NBC in November 2014, Simon said “Cancer has been a fight, a journey, an adventure and the most amazing experience of my life.”

How To Make Money Writing Online And Content Marketing

Submitted by: Carlos Perez

Article writers using content marketing often overlook content readability when composing their articles. Writing articles online for money must not only consider motivating readers to buy a product. To make money writing online, authors must also provide readable quality content.

With the advent of Google’s stated goal to improve a user’s search experience, many websites and articles lost their coveted positions in Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERPs). It is now, more than ever, that quality website content writing is king. Writing online for money as a means of ‘gaming’ the search engines through keyword stuffing, article blasts to thousands of article directories, and weak, poorly structured website content writing are gone.

Readability

Readability measures the grade level needed to understand any document. There are several schemes that are used to determine readability. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is one of better known and most used measurements. Your content writing can be much improved if you incorporate this measure into your article writing.

Although it has come under criticism for its simplicity, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scale is still widely used and can give you an idea of your article’s readability.

You can determine your article’s readability with the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scale which assigns a grade level to the written material. MS Word provides a readability statistics feature found under the spell check tab that determines your article’s grade level reading score.

There are free utilities on the web that allow you to copy and paste your document and the utility will return the grade level score. There are others. Online-Utitility.org is one. You can find them with a ‘free readability tools’ search on the internet.

You can also use the Google ‘more search tools’ feature found at the bottom of the left navigation bar when doing a Google search and choosing ‘reading level’. The organic results will show ‘basic’, ‘intermediate’, or ‘advanced’ reading levels for each of the page results.

Although, the results may not be 100% accurate, they do give you an idea of the grade level that your article or page is written at. It may seem that I am putting much emphasis on readability and quality content. It is important to note when writing for the web that the content be easily understandable by your targeted reader. You make make money writing articles online by targeting your reader.

Ideal Reading Level

If you dumb down your website content writing, the reader may feel insulted and dismiss your words. If your words are too pedantic, readers may accuse you of flaunting your knowledge. You may have quality content, but not readable by your targeted audience.

What is the ideal reading grade level? The answer eludes me. Many claim that the national average reading level is eighth grade and that article writers should write at that level or lower when writing for the web. I have yet to find any evidence to substantiate that claim or that you will make money writing to that grade level.

Studies have been conducted by various governmental agencies under the U.S. Department of Education and by independent private agencies on various aspects of literacy throughout the United States, but I have yet to find any authoritative data that specifically identifies the national reading average to be at the eighth grade level.

Adult Literacy in America

The study most often cited as the source of the eighth grade reading level claim is a 1993 study, Adult Literacy in America: A First Look at the Results of the National Adult Literacy Survey, by Irwin S. Kirsch, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics. You can review the results yourself at the National Center for Education Statistics.

However, the study does not specifically state that the national reading level average is at the eighth grade level. In fact, the study’s committee ” agreed that expressing the literacy proficiencies of adults in school-based terms or grade-level scores is inappropriate.”

The study did survey levels of literacy skills ranging from Level 1 to Level 5, with Level 5 being the most difficult or the highest skill level. The survey did show that about half the population performed at levels 3-5 and half performed within the lower levels 1 and 2.

SERPs and Readability

Nevertheless, if we accept the various reading level scales like, Flesch-Kincaid, article writers can improve their content marketing to more closely match the acceptance of targeted readers. In addition, Google and other search engines may or may not look favorably on the webpage or article and rank it higher than one that Google deems to be written at an inappropriate level as evidenced by the Official Google Blog article.

For instance, an article written at the twelfth grade level about building a tool shed may not be looked upon as worthy of Google’s definition of maximizing the user search experience. An article on the same subject written at the sixth or seventh grade level might well fair much better in the SERPs.

On the other hand, writing an article on the Literacy Statistics of Migrant Workers at the fourth or fifth grade level would not fare well with academic readers and probably not with the search engines.

The point is that article writers should consider readability when writing articles. The effort does not need to be an all consuming effort. Readability can easily be checked with one of the tools I mentioned earlier.

Be aware of the end user. The more you comply with Google’s goal of “providing the best user experience possible,” the more favorably the search engine will rank your writing for money efforts.
