Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Image: – United States Defense Department.

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY
See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Improving How You Speak In Public

By James Masterson

Feeling less confident when speaking in public? Here are some tips to boost your confidence in public speaking.

Tip no. 1. You should have eye contact with the audience all the time.

Tip no. 2. You should just relax. You know now by heart what you intend to say. Just do it.

Tip no. 3. If you can, use visual aids. This could help the people listening to you understand more of what you want to say. They get your concepts in an instant. Keep your visual aids simple. If, for example, you don t have the visual, then just remember to use words that would describe succinctly your point.

Tip no. 4. Why not give handouts to the audience? This would serve as their copy of your speech or at least the points you are tackling. They would feel that you gave them something that is free. Be simple and clear on what you say in the handout. Too many words and technical research could turn people off.

Tip no. 5. Do not think of how you can survive the speech, but on how

you can do your speech brilliantly.

Tip no. 6. Improving your speech unity and coherence would help your listeners understand your points and would help you be more confident in nailing down that speech. It pays to list down all the points you want to say, and arrange them in a logical, coherent order. So, for example, you are speaking in favor of stem cell research, enumerate your reasons why it is so, and close your speech with a conclusion.

Tip no. 7. Change the tonality and speed of your voice every now and then during the presentation. If you need to, convey energy. If you are emphasizing a point, slow down emphatically. If you are excited or angry about something, let your listeners feel that you are actually excited or angry about it.

Tip no. 8. Check out the various books available on how to present excellently. There are many books that are available that can help you boost your confidence in speaking in front of many people. There are also websites available on the Internet that give some tips on how to present brilliantly.

Speaking before a group of people can be intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it is greatly satisfying and great fun. Once you have learned to enjoy your presentations or even a part of these presentations, your confidence in yourself will greatly increase.

Four arrested after building spire in Moscow painted in Ukrainian colors

Friday, August 22, 2014

Russian authorities have detained four people on Wednesday on suspicion of vandalism, following an incident where the spire of the iconic Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building in Moscow was painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The suspects, reportedly consisting of two men and two women, allegedly ascended the building by stairs to reach its top floor, before using climbing equipment to complete the ascent, according to Moscow police.

File photo of the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building in 2009. Image: SphinxTheGeek.

Over the course of the previous night, the suspects proceeded to paint the top half of the building’s star-shaped spire blue and erected a Ukrainian flag atop at about 7:15 am local time, reports the Interfax news agency, with information corroborated by Moscow’s municipal emergency services. The alterations to the building made by the suspects remained for several hours, before workers removed the flag and repainted the spire to its normal color. Containing 32 floors and standing at a height of 176 m (577 ft), the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building is one of the Seven Sisters, skyscrapers constructed between 1947 and 1953 in Moscow under the direction of Joseph Stalin.

Following the act, at least one of the suspects then reportedly descended from the building by parachute, reported state news channel Rossiya 24, and captured on a video published by Lifenews, reportedly filmed by a local resident. Additional video broadcast by Rossiya 24, taken from a window, captured a parachuting suspect landing in a nearby playground. Among the suspects was Alexander Pogrebov, who has denied the charges brought forth by authorities. “I was detained for parachuting off the skyscraper. I chose that place because it’s beautiful. […] It just so happened that at the time of the jump, someone else committed an act of vandalism — they destroyed the spire with paint, and raised the Ukrainian flag.” said Pogrebov in an interview to LifeNews.

Pogrebov’s comments were supported by a police official, who stated to the Itar-Tass agency: “The two young men and two girls say they jumped from a high building with parachutes. They say they didn’t hoist any flag and didn’t paint the flag.” If convicted of vandalism, Pogrebov and the other suspects may be sentenced to a maximum of three years imprisonment. Over the phone to Bloomberg, an unidentified duty press official stated the suspects were previously arrested over other charges. According to reports from Russian state television, all four suspects were Russian citizens.

Other acts by Russian protestors to show support and solidarity with Ukraine, contrasting the approval which came following the Russian annexation of Crimea, included the singing of the Ukrainian national anthem by protestors while being arrested. Russian musician Andrey Makarevich, who fronts the band Mashina Vremeni, which translates to “Time Machine”, was labelled as a “traitor” by Russian lawmakers and musicians who supported Russian interests, after he traveled to eastern Ukraine last week to perform for displaced children in regions held by the Ukrainian army.

On a post on Twitter, Russian opposition leader Gennady Gudkov stated “I don’t justify youngsters who painted a star on the skyscraper, but this is an administrative offense, not criminal”. In 2011 and 2012, following accusations of electoral fraud during the parliamentary elections at the time, Gudkov supported protestors who took to the streets of Moscow in opposition to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The act comes just days prior to Ukraine’s Day of the National Flag on August 23 and Independence Day on August 24. The country’s president, Petro Poroshenko, expressed his approval from Kiev of the act and praise for the suspects in a written post on Facebook. “On the eve of Independence Day we are starting an initiative called ‘Our Colours,’ which is devoted to the Ukrainian flag” ((uk))Ukrainian language: ???????????? ??? ???????????? ?? ????????? ?????????? “???? ???????”, ??? ?????????? ???????????? ???????, wrote Poroshenko. “And it is symbolic that, on this day, our colours have been painted on what is perhaps the greatest skyscraper in Moscow. I urge Ukrainians throughout the world, wherever they are, on the eve of the anniversary of our independence, to decorate their homes, offices, and cars in our national colours.” ((uk))Ukrainian language: ???????????, ?? ? ??? ???? ? ???? ??????? ????????????, ???????, ????????? ??????? ? ??????. ???????? ????????? ?? ?????? ?????, ?? ? ???? ?? ????, ??????????? ??????? ????????????, ?????????? ???? ???????, ?????, ???? ? ???? ??????????? ???????.

“I like very much the fact that, on the eve of celebrating the Ukrainian flag, one of Moscow’s highest buildings was painted in our colors,” Poroshenko said in a video posted on Facebook. “I congratulate these Ukrainians.” Following the deaths of more than 2,000 people and the displacement of 300,000 from their homes amid fighting in eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian armed forced and pro-Russian separatists, Poroshenko is scheduled to discuss the crisis with Putin next week, the first such meeting in two months.

A high-speed pre-dawn pursuit on 29 August, 2005 ended in a fatal accident. A local resident reported to police at 1:00 am (local time) that two people appeared to be attempting to steal a Honda Civic near West 75th Circle in Westminster, Colorado. As the two individuals left the scene in the stolen car, the resident followed in his own vehicle until the passenger stepped out of the Honda and opened fire with a shotgun. The police came upon the suspects near West 72nd Avenue & Pierce Street, Arvada, Colorado, and began pursuit.

The chase proceeded southbound on Sheridan Boulevard and northeast on Interstate 76, reaching speeds of 120 miles per hour (190 kilometres per hour). When the vehicle attempted to merge onto southeast-bound I-270 in Commerce City, Colorado the suspects lost control and impacted two other vehicles.

The stolen vehicle may have punctured one or more tires, as sparks were observed from the bottom of the car as it began the merge. The stolen car struck the middle of the passenger’s side of a Toyota 4Runner in the left-hand lane and sent it careening across the median into the northwest-bound lanes of traffic, where it rolled several times. The stolen vehicle then bounced off the guardrail on the right shoulder and impacted a Ford pickup truck before coming to rest. The two suspects then escaped on foot, discarding some of their clothing as they fled. One of the passengers traveling in the Toyota 4Runner, Brian Kapko, 19, of Costa Mesa, California, was killed.

After eight hours of searching for the perpetrators, the police called off their manhunt. Later in the day, a witness alerted the police about two “suspicious persons” near the scene of the accident. The police arrested a Matthew G. Wartena, 19, and a 16 year old male. Wartena was wearing only boxer shorts, socks and a bloody tank top. The juvenile wore only one sock and tan pants. The pair were charged with suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, vehicular eluding, and criminal trespass. At the time of the incident Wartena was free on bond, having pleaded guilty the month before to forgery of a government document.

Should You Look For A Bricks And Mortar Company For Printing In Orange County?

byAlma Abell

With all of the online printing options out there, some may wonder why they should bother looking for a bricks-and-mortar option. In most cases, it comes down to quality. The inexpensive internet printers typically offer fairly cheap stock for their basic options, and if you upgrade to something that doesn’t seem so flimsy, suddenly it isn’t so cheap anymore. Not only that, it can be hard to tell just what you’re going to get. Internet options mention weights of paper, but for someone who isn’t used to dealing with printed materials, that isn’t enough information.

When you use a physical shop for Printing in Orange County, you don’t have to wonder what each weight of paper feels like. You can just ask the person at the counter to show you a sample. Then, you’ll know for sure what goes with each class and type of paper or card stock.

The ability to directly feel and see what you’ll be dealing with is also important when it comes to ink options. Computer monitors vary in how they show colors, and they can’t exactly replicate all of the options. The big book of Pantone colors that a printer has, on the other hand, has physical samples of every color that the printer has available. It can take a while to choose a specific shade from the book, but once you do, you’ll get exactly what you expected.

Offline printers can also handle more types of jobs than their online counterparts. Online printers usually focus on only the most popular types of products, such as business cards, brochures, and wedding invitations. Offline ones have all of those things, but can also do things like raffle tickets, fully-customized checks, holiday cards, yard signs, and even tax forms. This makes an offline printer your best bet for any type of custom Printing in Orange County.

With all of these benefits, it’s clear that bricks-and-mortar printing is not obsolete. Whenever you need to make a good impression without having to guess about what you’ll actually get, it’s the first option you should consider. Chances are that your local print shop will turn out to be the answer.Click here for more information.

The Internet group Project Chanology today held protests critical of the Church of Scientology. The protests marked what would have been the 49th birthday of Lisa McPherson, who is claimed to be a victim of the Church of Scientology’s practices. Lisa died in 1995 during a running of what Scientologists refer to as an Introspection Rundown, a procedure intended to help Church members deal with a psychotic or deeply traumatic event.

Protests were planned throughout the day in 14 countries and over 50 different cities. The estimation of total protesters world wide for Feb. 10, 2008 is 9,250 people.

Wikinews had correspondents at a number of protest locations to report on the events. This article was updated throughout the day with reports from around the globe.

The Basics Of Forex Trading For Beginners

The Basics Of Forex Trading For Beginners

by

DivisaFX

If you\’re just getting started in the currency markets, you should make sure that you know the basics of Forex trading before you consider risking your hard earned money. Otherwise, you can be sure that you will blow out your account very, very quickly. Many of the so called Forex \”Gurus\” out there will cover one or two off these basics adequately, but you need to have all three in place to truly be prepared for the challenges of trading Forex for a profit.

The basics of Forex

trading I\’m talking about are Method, Mindset and Money Management. These 3 Ms form the foundation of every successful trading operation, ignore one or more and you are guaranteed to lose money. The first of these, your Method, covers how you analyze the market, make your trading decisions, and manage your trades. The second of these, your Mindset, has to do with whether you are disciplined and consistent in your trading, and if you are in control of your trading or if it is control of you. Finally, your Money Management strategy is a crucial and often overlooked component of successful trading. Without the proper money management strategy, you are always at risk of blowing out your account, and you will find it very hard to hold on to your profits.

Here\’s how to master these 3 essential basics of Forex trading:The Basics Of Forex Trading #1: Method Without a proven Method for consistently extracting profits from the market, you are essentially gambling every time you enter a trade. A successful method covers not just your trade entry, but the entire process from analyzing the markets, identifying trade opportunities, entering and exiting your trades, and setting your stop loss and target profit zones. You should also have a solid underlying concept, be it trend following, range trading, breakout trading or targeting the overbought/oversold areas. So how do you put a successful Method together? First and foremost, you begin by studying the historical prices of the currency pair that you want to trade. If you\’re just starting out, you\’re better of focusing on just one pair and getting really familiar with the market behavior of that particular pair, instead of spreading yourself too thin over multiple currency pairs. As you observe how the prices fluctuate over time, take note of the opportunities that exist within the market. You can then begin to quantify your potential entries, exits, stop and profit points and test them to find the optimal combination. Alternatively, you can invest in someone else\’s strategy or system, and adjust it to suit your own observations and research. The Basics Of Forex Trading #2: Mindset One of the basics of Forex

trading that is often overlooked by beginners especially is the importance of the right Mindset. It may surprise you to discover that most people don\’t lose money in Forex because they don\’t have a profitable method. They lose money because of trading mistakes that stem from a lack of emotional control and poor application of discipline. Even if you have the best method in the world, but your poor Mindset prevents you from applying it correctly, you are going to lose money.

When you first start trading your system, you should do it on a mini or micro lot account on the lowest possible size. That way, you eliminate the emotional part of trading that is related to winning and losing money, and instead allow yourself to concentrate on applying your Method correctly. After 2-3 months of consistent performance and strict adherence to the rules of your system, you can progress to trading a full account. Don\’t get complacent when you increase your account size though, continue to be cautious and focus on trading well, not the monetary results of your trading. The Basics Of Forex Trading #3: Money Management Last but not least of the basics of Forex

trading is Money Management. Good Money Management will allow you to grow your capital optimally, while minimizing your risk of drawdown due to a bad streak of losing trades. You may have heard of the 2% rule of money management in Forex, which means that you can only risk 2% of your capital on any given trade. For example, if you have $10,000 in your trading account as risk capital, you can risk up to $200 on one trade. Let\’s say that you have a trade with a stop loss of 20 pips away from your entry, meaning that your worst case loss is 20 pips. Therefore, your maximum position size is 1 full lot, which puts your risk on the trade at $200.

Whenever you\’re not doing well in your trading, it\’s probably down to the failure to adhere to one or more of these basics of Forex trading. To improve your performance, you should work on these fundamentals, and you\’ll have a firm foundation to build on in your pursuit of Forex trading profits. Divisa Capital

Two-time Eurovision entrant Edsilia Rombley discusses music, love, and her contrasting Contest experiences

Eurovision ’98 and ’07 representative Edsilia Rombley on the perceived “Americanization” of Dutch popular music: “I think Dutch pop music has always been influenced by America, this was set in long before I entered the Songfestival; on one hand I think this is a great thing, because America has so many great artists. It’s just important that we, while embracing foreign influences, don’t forget all the talents in the Netherlands, who make great Dutch music.”Photo: Nico Swartz

When she was barely 20 years old, Dutch singer Edsilia Rombley got her first large taste of international acclaim. Already a winner of the smaller imitation contest Soundmix Show, she decided to shoot higher. With a great deal of determination, she performed in front of hundreds of millions of television viewers at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Her song, the R&B flavored “Hemel en aarde” (Heaven and earth), placed fourth and gave her country their highest placing at Eurovision since their last win in 1975. No Dutch contestant after her has been able to place similarly.

After the accolades died down, Rombley set her sights on promoting her vision and passion through her music. Partnering with producer Tjeerd Oosterhuis became a double blessing; eventually they became husband and wife. Even a return to Eurovision at the 2007 Contest, with less than favorable results, didn’t keep her discouraged for long. Today she has finished recording a live CD of her favorite English songs, and a live DVD of selections in Dutch, and is currently touring in singing engagements this spring in theaters across the Netherlands.

Edsilia Rombley granted Wikinews’ Mike Halterman an interview; she reflected on her career, her inspirations, what a day is like in her life, and what she would love to do in the future. This is the third in a series of interviews with past Eurovision contestants, which will be published sporadically in the lead-up to mid-May’s next contest in Moscow.
